Today was unusual. I spent the morning in a conference room overlooking Washington Square Park to discuss the next 50 years of the arts. They talked of audacity and innovation. They said it's important to be in a constant state of flow, to be a constant beginner. The notion of play, they said, is the most important. And then they talked about the necessity of failure. Success always comes after many failures.
Think about that.
The president of the Julliard School came in to talk about entrepreneurship. Failure was high on his list of things to do. He said something else that was particularly resonating. "Sometimes it’s not just pronouncing the words well, but actually knowing what you are saying," he said.
Think about that.
And then after lunch, we learned how to write a musical. We were divided into groups, given a photograph, and left to create the lyrics for an original song in 45 minutes. It was stressful and completely fun!
And I'd love to post the video, but damn it, I failed. I'm a constant beginner. But I'm in the flow. Happy weekend.
