Over 20 years ago my mom began working with another lady to make sure needy people in our small town had food during the holidays. Our house would be full of hundreds of cans of green beans amd bread and whatever else she could get donated. My brothers and I were the chief sackers and delivery boys. I remember going in so many homes. Once we went in one with a dirt floor. Others were cold and dark. Some were so crowded we could hardly get in. Unimagineable in our very small town. But everyone had a smile when we left. This morning there were over 40 volunteers, and many of them were teenagers. My mom gave a wonderful speech, and she retold so many of the stories from the last 20 years. She ended by saying,"Today, I hope you find your story." When she finished speaking, I saw a lady I didn't know approach my mom, and I could tell the lady was tearful. I saw my mom put her arm around the lady for the longest time. Later I asked what happened. My mom said the lady and her family have received food for several years, including this year. The lady didn't know if it was okay for them to help deliver food. My mom's answer to her -- "Of course you are. Everyone is welcome here." Before long, I saw my mom asking that lady for advice. They were working together. We were all part of something very big today, and I got hugs from complete strangers. I love my mom for starting all of this. And for other things too. And also for the fact that she's at the grocery store now buying food for us. Let the eating begin!
