I admit that one of the perks of this job is the travel. And while I fly
economy, I can pretty much guarantee that I'll be sleeping in a nice swanky
hotel. Folks, the music stopped last night.
I landed in Hong Kong, jumped on the train to Kowloon, and then hopped in a
taxi. And as the taxi driver sped through the streets, I saw that beautiful
skyline creep away. The driver had me talking on the CB radio to the
dispatcher. Five times I said, "REGAL ORIENTAL. 30-38 Sa Po Road".
And I had to say it real loud and real slow because that's required.
So I called up Edmund, our trusty alumnus in Hong Kong. Edmund knows
everyone and everything. But he didn't know Regal Oriental in Kowloon. He
called the hotel, and then he called me back.
"Oh, you are in a bad hotel. It's the industrial section," he said.
Yep, Edmund. You're right.
When I was here a few years ago, I was on the 57th floor of the Conrad
Hotel. I watched the boats come into Victoria Harbor, and I'd glance at the
mountains and wonder what was on the other side. When people ask what is my
favorite city in Asia, I always say Hong Kong. That trip in 2007 was
amazing.
This morning I watched a lady hang out her laundry, and you know, that
wasn't so amazing. It's real. But not amazing.
I guess you need both. Everyday can't be boats, and water, and mountains all
in one view. Some days you gotta do laundry.
