Hi.

Welcome to my blog.

Good Morning Jakarta

Saturday, August 2 - When I arrived Friday night, I was curious what the city would look like in the morning. Here's my first view of Jakarta:

On Saturday morning, I had to walk to the mall next door to get cash to pay the import tax on the FedEx package we shipped for the event.

Off I went. Past the manicured entrance. Then the cascading waterfall. Then armed security. "Good bye, sir," the guard said.

Now I was on the street. Motorcycles zoomed past. A crowd of people waited at the bus stop. Old buses full of people pulled up. Men hung on to the back entrance and yelled at the passengers waiting to board. More motorcycles buzzed by. Then two goats crossed in front of me. They walked up this hill toward a crowd of tin stalls where people were moving about.

I was curious what was up that hill. But I was also apprehensive about intruding into a local place. This was not a tourist destination.

I found the Citi ATM. Withdrew 750,000 Rupiah and made my way back to the hotel.

"Good morning, sir," the guard said, with the gun strapped across his chest.

"Good morning, " I said.

I returned to my room still curious about what was up that hill.
