The top story this morning from Kuala Lumpur: Better Ties with Maids
Employers and new workers to attend half-day course According to the New Straits Times in Kuala Lumpur, it seems like there's a
little problem with the maids and their employers, and the government has
created a class to solve the problem. Did you know? 2,000 new maids enter Malaysia every month from the Philippines, Cambodia,
India, Pakistan, Nepal and Myanmar. In total there are about 200,000 maids
here. The country's Human Resource Minister said the course will "expose both
parties to their responsibilities and to avoid untoward incidents." And what is untoward exactly? The Employers have to send the maids for medical checkups, provide room,
food, and adequate rest time. They have to treat them nice, and pay them on
time. If the maid is dead or missing, Mr. Bossman has to report it. And for
goodness sake, the employers can't let the maids marry a local. And the Maids have to do basically what maids do, then do as they are told
by the Boss Lady, take care of the kids and grandparents. The maids cannot
get pregnant or give birth in Malaysia. That would be terrible. Don't worry though. Upon completion of the course, each party is given a
booklet with helpful information on basically being a decent human being and
treating people with respect. Yeah, there's a number to call too. Thank goodness somebody thought to do this. I mean, yesterday's headline was
about three young girls who were caned because they had "illicit sex". As
far as I can tell that means they were 17, unmarried, and they got pregnant.
And the most responsible thing to do was to cane them. What? Really? You should also know the other big news story today - Popeye's Fried Chicken
is opening.
