This morning, a crowd was gathered where Sullivan Street ends at the park. People were taking pictures. Others were on their phones. I was curious.
As I got closer, I could see one of the hawks that lives in Washington Square Park perched on the fence staring right back at them. When I got close enough to take a photo, he flew off to chase the 20 or so squirrels running for dear life. The crowd roared, and the squirrels made it to safety. The hawk took his spot on a lamplight. The squirrels ran out. He swooped down. The squirrels squealed their way to cover. The crowd roared.
At first, I expected some gory catch, but soon realized it was all a game. Tease and repeat. Summer Fridays. Playtime in the animal kingdom. Gotta love it.
